Winter Wonderland Table Runner

This beautiful table runner is simple to make yet looks more complicated with the texture created by the Granny Spike Stitch. It can be made in any combination of colors and with any 4 ply cotton or acrylic yarn. The Crab stitch border adds additional interest and is easy to work as well. This pattern size can be adjusted both width wise and lengthwise so you can create exactly what you need for your table.

Yarn: I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Antique White and Linen, 1 Skein each.

Hook: Size H 5.00mm

Finished size: 12.5” wide x 39” long

Stitches used:

Ch – chain

Dc- Double Crochet

Granny Spike stitch – is combination of dc, spike dc, dc

Spike dc – yarn over, insert hook into middle chain from previous row, yarn over, pull through and pull up a tall loop, yarn over and pull through loops, yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops

Crab stitch or Reverse Single Crochet – Insert hook into stitch to the right of your hook, instead of the left side. YO, pull through, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. That’s it! Do the same in the next stitch.

Ch41 – or multiples of 4 +1

Foundation Row- In 5th ch from hook 3 dc in that same stitch. Ch 1.

[Skip 3 stitches, 3 dc in next stitch, ch 1] repeat until 4 stitches left 2 dc in last st. Ch 2, turn.

Row A – In ch 1 space *dc, spike dc ( yarn over, insert hook into middle chain from previous row, yarn over, pull through and pull up a tall loop, yarn over and pull through loops, yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops) dc, ch1*, move to next ch space and repeat until end. 2 dc in last space made by the turning chain from the previous row and the 2dc. Ch 2, turn. Next row – Complete Row A once again. Then do Row B.

Row B- repeat row A up to the ch2 , turn at the end. If changing colors, drop color one, do not fasten off. It will be carried up the side. Add the new color, then chain 2 and turn.

You have just completed the first 4 rows of the pattern. For the next 4 rows, crochet

Row A, Row A, Row A, Row B.

Repeat the 4 row pattern to your desired length. At the end of the last row, only Ch 1, do not turn. In my example, the 4 row pattern was completed 21 times. Before adding the border, the piece measures 11.5” x 38.5”.

Border-

Row 1 – 1 HDC in each row end along the long side of the piece. (82+ 3 HDC in corner). Continuing on short side, HDC in 1st stitch, *HDC in space before long dc spike, HDC in space after long dc spike, HDC in next stitch* repeat until you reach the next corner, 3 HDC in corner. (27 hdc + 3 HDC in corner). 1 HDC in each row end along the 2nd long side of the piece. (82+ 3 HDC in corner). For the last short side, HDC in 3 stitches, sk next stitch, HDC in next 3 stitches for a total of 9 times. (27 HDC). 2 HDC in corner and slip stitch to first stitch of the border.

Row 2- ch 1 turn. Crab stitch (reverse single crochet) all the way around. Slip stitch into first stitch and fasten off.
